Unit Conversion Cheat Sheet: The Essential Reference Guide
Whether you are cooking with a recipe from another country, sizing materials for a project, interpreting scientific data, or simply trying to understand the weather forecast while traveling, unit conversion is a daily necessity. The metric system and imperial system coexist worldwide, and even within the metric system, switching between scales (millimeters to kilometers, grams to kilograms) requires mental arithmetic that is easy to get wrong. This guide provides the essential conversions, the formulas behind them, and mental shortcuts to make quick estimates.
Length and Distance
Length is the most frequently converted measurement. The key relationships:
- 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (exact)
- 1 foot = 30.48 centimeters = 0.3048 meters
- 1 yard = 0.9144 meters
- 1 mile = 1.609 kilometers
- 1 kilometer = 0.621 miles
Mental shortcut for miles to kilometers: multiply by 1.6. So 60 miles is about 96 km. For a rougher but faster estimate, multiply by 8 and divide by 5 (60 x 8 / 5 = 96).
Mental shortcut for centimeters to inches: divide by 2.5. A 10 cm object is about 4 inches. Close enough for quick estimates.

Weight and Mass
Weight conversions come up in cooking, shipping, fitness, and medicine:
- 1 pound (lb) = 453.6 grams = 0.4536 kilograms
- 1 kilogram = 2.205 pounds
- 1 ounce (oz) = 28.35 grams
- 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35 kilograms (common in the UK)
- 1 metric ton = 1,000 kilograms = 2,205 pounds
Mental shortcut for kilograms to pounds: double it and add 10%. So 70 kg is about 140 + 14 = 154 lbs (actual: 154.3). Remarkably accurate for a mental estimate.
Mental shortcut for pounds to kilograms: halve it and subtract 10%. So 180 lbs is about 90 - 9 = 81 kg (actual: 81.6).
Temperature
Temperature conversion confuses people because it is not a simple multiplication. The scales have different zero points:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9/5, then add 32. So 20C = (20 x 9/5) + 32 = 68F.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. So 72F = (72 - 32) x 5/9 = 22.2C.
- Celsius to Kelvin: add 273.15. So 0C = 273.15K.
Mental shortcut for Celsius to Fahrenheit: double the Celsius value and add 30. This gives 20C = 70F (actual: 68F). Not exact, but useful for weather and room temperature ranges.

Volume
Volume conversions are especially tricky because the US customary system, the UK imperial system, and the metric system all have their own definitions:
- 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters
- 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters
- 1 liter = 0.264 US gallons
- 1 US cup = 236.6 ml (approximately 240 ml)
- 1 US fluid ounce = 29.57 ml
- 1 tablespoon = 14.79 ml (approximately 15 ml)
The difference between US and UK gallons catches people off guard. A US gallon is about 83% of an imperial gallon. When reading fuel economy figures, make sure you know which gallon is being used.
Digital Storage
In computing, storage units follow two systems that are easy to confuse:
- Decimal (SI) system: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Used by hard drive manufacturers and network speeds.
- Binary system: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Used by operating systems and RAM.
This is why a "500 GB" hard drive shows about 465 GB in your operating system. The drive has 500,000,000,000 bytes (500 GB decimal), but the OS reports in GiB (500,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 465.66 GiB).
For reference: 1 TB = 1,000 GB = approximately 931 GiB. When buying storage, expect to see about 7% less usable space than the label suggests.
Currency: A Special Case
Unlike physical units, currency exchange rates change constantly. There is no fixed formula. A rate that is accurate today may be off by several percent tomorrow. When traveling, remember that the rate you get at an airport or hotel will be worse than the market rate, typically by 3-10%.
Speed
- 1 mph = 1.609 km/h
- 1 km/h = 0.621 mph
- 1 knot = 1.852 km/h = 1.151 mph
Mental shortcut for mph to km/h: add 60% of the value. So 60 mph + 36 = 96 km/h (actual: 96.6). For km/h to mph, subtract 40%: 100 km/h - 40 = 60 mph (actual: 62.1, so this approximation is rougher).
Common Conversion Mistakes
- Confusing mass and weight. In everyday use they are interchangeable, but in science, mass (kg) is constant while weight (newtons) depends on gravity.
- Mixing US and UK units. A US pint is 473 ml; a UK pint is 568 ml. US and UK tablespoons differ too.
- Rounding too aggressively. For cooking, rounding 28.35 grams to 30 grams per ounce is fine. For engineering or medicine, that 6% error could be critical.
- Forgetting temperature offsets. You cannot convert Celsius to Fahrenheit by just multiplying, because the scales have different zero points.
